When you first start using Linux, one of the most confusing things is the file system structure. Unlike Windows, where you have drives like C:\ and D:\, Linux has a single-rooted directory structure starting from /.

In this guide, we’ll explore the Linux file system, its important directories, and how you can navigate them as a beginner.


🌳 The Root Directory /

At the very top of the Linux file system is the root directory (/). Everything in Linux begins here. All files, directories, and devices branch out from /.

Think of / as the trunk of a tree, and all other folders as its branches.


📂 Important Directories in Linux

Here are the most commonly used directories you’ll encounter in Linux:

  • /home → Stores personal files and settings for each user. For example, your documents, downloads, and configurations live here.

  • /root → The home directory of the root (superuser). Not to be confused with /.

  • /bin → Contains essential user commands like ls, cat, cp, mv.

  • /sbin → Contains system administration commands, usually for root users.

  • /etc → Stores configuration files. For example, network, user accounts, and system services settings.

  • /var → Contains variable data like logs, mail, and spool files.

  • /tmp → Temporary files created by programs. Cleared on reboot.

  • /usr → Contains user applications, documentation, and utilities.

  • /lib → Shared libraries and kernel modules needed for system boot and running applications.

  • /dev → Represents devices (like USB drives, hard disks, etc.) as files.

  • /mnt and /media → Temporary mount points for external devices such as USBs or CDs.

  • /opt → Optional software packages installed by users or vendors.

Here are some basic commands to explore Linux directories:

  • pwd → Print the current working directory.

  • ls → List files and directories.

  • cd /path/to/dir → Change directory.

  • tree → Display directory structure (you may need to install it first).

Example:

pwd
/home/saumya

This means you are currently inside your user’s home directory.
